n8n review: automation for people willing to own the workflow
n8n is worth evaluating when a repeat process needs branching, integrations and a clear record of what ran. The hard part is defining the process and handling failure, not simply adding an AI step.
Our recommendation
Shortlist n8n for a repeatable business workflow with a named maintainer. Start with draft creation or internal reporting before automating public messages. This review does not claim a tested deployment or measured time savings.
How its pricing model works
n8n describes an execution as a run of the whole workflow rather than a charge for every individual step. Its pricing page also distinguishes plan limits, execution retention and AI-related allowances. Estimate both normal runs and retries when considering a plan. Connected services may charge separately, so the workflow subscription is not necessarily the whole operating cost.
Cloud or self-hosted
The official offering includes hosted and self-hosted options. Our practical advice: choose hosting based on who will maintain it, not only the subscription headline. Self-hosting means someone must manage availability, updates and backups. Check the current license and plan terms for your intended use; this review is not a blanket claim that all commercial deployments are unrestricted.
A useful first workflow
A sensible first experiment is a weekly internal content report: read a small test dataset, calculate totals, create a draft summary and save it for review. Use fictional data first. Add a deliberate missing field and a duplicate record. The workflow should report the missing information and avoid double counting rather than silently producing a confident summary.
Where AI helps—and where it does not
Use AI for draft explanations or categorization where a human can inspect the result. Use deterministic calculations for totals and explicit rules for publishing authority. A model's request to send a message should not become permission to send it. Record each run's status so a retry can resume work without repeating external actions.
Who should look elsewhere first
If the process changes every day or nobody will maintain the connections, manual work may still be cheaper. If your only need is one scheduled reminder, a dedicated calendar or scheduler may be enough. Compare n8n with Make and Zapier using the same completed workflow, including the work required when authentication expires.
Evidence and next test
This assessment is based on official product information and an editorial evaluation plan. We have not deployed or benchmarked n8n for this review. No uptime, savings, integration success rate or numerical Forge Score is claimed. A future field test should save the workflow, redacted run logs, failure cases and total operating cost.
