Gemini 3.6 Flash review: five small-business tasks tested

AI Forgefathers · Tested September 16, 2026 · Published September 17, 2026

Gemini handled our supplied business information and calculations well. Its current-product research needed much more checking. In this small test, it answered six document questions correctly and calculated a fictional job sheet correctly on two separate attempts. It also overstated a free tool's AI allowance and gave incorrect word counts when asked to check its own captions.

Our recommendation from these results: try it for first drafts, extracting answers from material you provide, and calculations you can independently verify. Check current prices, plan limits and feature claims at the source before making a decision or publishing its answer.

What we actually tested

We used the Gemini web app with 3.6 Flash selected. We ran five tasks in separate chats, saved each first answer, and gave each one a single revision request written before testing. We then repeated the original email and spreadsheet prompts in new chats: seven conversations and twelve completed answers altogether.

The businesses, customers, policies and job records were fictional. The research task used real product information. Word counts were checked locally; a separate calculation using Python decimal arithmetic supplied the spreadsheet answer key.

Version note: this article covers the 3.6 Flash mode selected during our test. It is not a review of the newer 3.7 Flash model. Google documents both versions separately. Gemini 3.6 Flash documentation · Gemini 3.7 Flash announcement

Access disclosure: this run used an existing, organization-managed Google account. We purchased no upgrade and incurred no new subscription or API charge. We did not verify that the account matched the consumer Free plan, so this is not a verified Gemini Free review. We did not test the other model modes offered in the account.

Pass means the output met this task's checked requirements. Partial means it was useful but needed a stated correction or editorial change. Fail means a material factual or evidence problem prevented us from relying on the initial answer. These judgments are about these outputs, not an overall model score.

1. Customer email: usable, with one small assumption

We asked for a friendly email requesting deck dimensions, current photos and confirmation of whether an old coating was peeling. No price, appointment, warranty or availability had been established. The prompt explicitly prohibited invented facts or promises and capped the whole answer at 110 words.

Gemini's first response used 88 words, asked for all three details and invented no price or date. However, it added:

Once we have these three pieces of information, we will review them and get back to you.

That is a routine business sentence, but it commits the business to a follow-up that our strict brief did not supply. Its revision repeated the answer unchanged. A fresh-chat repeat used 73 words and added a similar commitment.

This was a small instruction-following issue, not a fabricated quote or a dangerous recommendation. A human could remove the line quickly. For customer-facing drafts, check that the model has not quietly promised a next step on your behalf.

2. Social captions: the copy was better than its counting

We requested three Facebook captions for a fictional window-cleaning business. Each had to contain 45–65 whitespace-separated words, use a distinct angle, avoid invented claims and end with the exact call to action, “Message us for an estimate.”

All three met the length requirement and included the required CTA. Their actual counts were 53, 51 and 46. They needed light editorial attention: one emphasized light and views rather than the requested first-impression angle, and another assumed a specific owner-led explanation process that our facts did not establish.

The revealing part was the revision. We asked Gemini to count the words and correct any problems. It left the captions unchanged but labeled them 49, 51 and 47 words. Two of its three reported counts were wrong, even though the actual captions were already within range.

Use a word counter for a hard limit. Asking the same model to audit itself did not provide an independent check here.

3. Document comprehension: six correct answers

We pasted a fourteen-line operating note with details designed to be easy to confuse: phone hours differed from service hours; an early-booking deposit exception overrode the usual deposit; some services were excluded; and a price and automatic refund policy were deliberately unspecified.

Gemini correctly answered all six questions and cited the supporting line numbers. It applied the deposit exception to the eligible booking, used the standard deposit for the later booking, and said “Not specified” where the source did not establish an answer.

The first summary contained 77 words. The revision added useful detail and landed at exactly 90 words, still within our limit. The six answers remained correct.

This supports using Gemini to extract answers from a short, explicit source. It does not establish performance on long documents, scans, conflicting files or complicated contracts. We pasted the text, so file parsing was not part of this test.

4. Spreadsheet arithmetic: every requested result correct

Our twelve-row fictional job sheet included completed, pending and cancelled jobs; discounts; a fully discounted job that still had a material cost; and two half-cent rounding cases. We required decimal half-up rounding on each revenue line before summing.

ResultIndependent answerGemini
Completed jobs88
Net revenue$2,099.83$2,099.83
Material cost$617.50$617.50
Revenue minus material cost$1,482.33$1,482.33
Highest-revenue jobJ006, $831.73J006, $831.73
Excluded jobsJ003, J005, J009, J012Correct

All eight included row revenues were also correct. The revision and a fresh-chat repeat returned the same correct results. In the first conversation, Gemini exposed executed Python code using Decimal and ROUND_HALF_UP; its displayed calculation output matched its answer.

We used pasted CSV after a separate first-use upload agreement appeared. We did not accept that agreement for this run. Therefore, this result tests arithmetic from pasted data, not CSV attachment handling. That distinction is a testing limitation, not evidence of a file-upload defect.

The remaining $1,482.33 is revenue minus the supplied material costs, not full business profit: the fixture does not include labor, overhead, taxes or other costs.

5. Buying research: polished output, material errors

We asked Gemini to choose between Canva Free, Adobe Express Free and VistaCreate Starter for a solo cleaner. The requirements were a $0 ongoing budget, no card or paid trial, usable social graphics and a flyer, and some AI help. We explicitly requested current official sources and clear distinctions between free and paid features.

Gemini recommended Canva Free. That recommendation may be reasonable, but parts of its supporting comparison were unreliable:

The fixed revision prompt improved the answer. Gemini withdrew the flat 200-use statement, qualified the Adobe and VistaCreate quota claims, and listed account checks. However, it did not replace the Canva number with the current advertised estimate, and its revised answer still displayed third-party citation labels, including Orb Billing and Pam Allen Online.

We did not verify every assertion or sign into those three design tools as part of this task. The finding is specific: this research answer contained at least one demonstrably wrong number, an unsupported free-feature claim, and a source-selection failure. A fluent comparison table was not enough evidence to act on.

Who should try Gemini based on this test?

Our strongest results came when the input and success criteria were explicit: a short source document and a small calculation with a known formula. The email and caption drafts were usable starting points with human editing. Current product research required direct source checking.

For a small business, our suggested workflow is to supply the facts, state the limits, request an answer that is easy to inspect, and verify the parts that matter. Count constrained text with a counter, compare calculations with an independent formula, and open official sources for changing product details.

This is a small sample, not a statistical benchmark or a comparison against ChatGPT, Claude or Grok. Two successful arithmetic attempts do not establish general reliability. We did not test image generation, voice, long files, integrations, paid modes, support quality or privacy controls, and we did not measure controlled response speed. Features and limits can change after the test date.

Reproduce the test

The companion evidence pack includes the exact prompts, first answers, fixed revision requests, revised answers, two repeat answers, fictional CSV, answer keys and local checker. Responses are preserved as transcripts, not recreated screenshots. Screenshots captured during the session remain in the testing task history; the downloadable pack does not claim to contain native screenshots.

Suggested next experiment: run this same suite on another assistant with its access tier verified, then compare outputs using the same criteria. That would add a second piece of original evidence without changing the rules after seeing the answers.

Job-sheet arithmetic

04-spreadsheet-pasted-prompt.txt

Analyze the fictional jobs CSV pasted below. Use only rows whose status is exactly Completed. material_cost is the total cost for that row, not a per-unit cost.

For each included row, calculate net revenue = quantity * unit_price * (1 - discount_pct/100). Round each row's net revenue to two decimal places using decimal half-up rounding before adding the rows. Exclude Pending and Cancelled rows from every total.

Report: (1) number of completed jobs; (2) total net revenue; (3) total material cost; (4) revenue minus material cost; (5) job ID with the highest net revenue and its amount; (6) excluded job IDs. Show enough working to audit the calculation. State amounts in dollars. Do not count this as accounting advice; it is an arithmetic test using fictional data.

Help a fictional solo residential cleaner choose ONE tool from Canva Free, Adobe Express Free, and VistaCreate Starter. The budget is $0 ongoing, with no payment card and no time-limited paid trial. The cleaner needs to make a square Facebook graphic, a portrait story, and a one-page flyer using their own photos and logo, then download usable files without a watermark or payment. They also want some AI help writing captions or generating/editing visuals, but a small quota is acceptable.

Use current official vendor sources and link to the exact pages that support your claims. Give a compact comparison table and one recommendation. Distinguish the permanently free plan from trial-only or paid features, and flag premium assets, AI quotas and export restrictions that could change the outcome. State what you cannot verify. Do not claim something is unavailable merely because you did not find it. Keep your answer under 600 words.

Core Recommendation

For a $0 ongoing budget with no payment card, Canva Free is the single best choice. It provides a permanently free tier with zero trial traps, seamless custom logo and photo uploads, and direct high-resolution PNG/PDF exports with no watermarks as long as you stick to free assets.

Why Canva Free Wins for Your Workflow

No Watermarks or Payment Hurdles: You can design your square Facebook graphic, portrait story, and printable flyer entirely for free. Downloads in PNG, JPG, and Print PDF formats are completely clean, provided you use your own uploaded assets or filter templates by "Free".
PDFChef by Movavi

Upfront Asset Clarity: Canva clearly flags paid elements with a crown icon ($), preventing accidental watermarking upon export.

Usable Generative AI Quotas: The free plan grants up to 200 standard AI uses per month (e.g., Magic Write for caption copy or simple photo enhancements), which is plenty for a solo cleaner's weekly marketing needs.

Critical Traps & Free Tier Limitations

Premium Asset Paywalls: All three platforms mix paid stock photos, graphics, and templates into their libraries. In Canva, using a premium asset will place a grid watermark on export unless you pay for that specific item. Workaround: Filter search results by "Free" and use your own cleaning photos.
CreatorStackClub

Manual Re-creation (No One-Click Resizing): Automated layout resizing (e.g., changing a 1:1 post to a 9:16 story) is a paid feature across all three services. You must start new designs from scratch using standard dimension templates for your story and flyer.

Background Removal Paywall: One-click background removal for logos or photo cutouts requires a paid plan on Canva and VistaCreate.

What Cannot Be Verified

Factual Audit & Corrections

AI Usage Quotas: Canva Free’s exact AI limits are shared across tools and vary depending on whether tools are classified as Standard, Premium, or third-party. Stating a flat ~200 monthly AI uses across all Magic Studio tools is inaccurate, as some features consume credits at different rates or rely on lifetime/monthly caps.

Platform Comparison Scope: Unverified claims regarding specific VistaCreate AI quotas or exact Adobe Firefly monthly credit allocations on free accounts were generalized or unsupported by single public landing pages without logging in.

Background Removal: Confirmed across official pages that 1-click background removal is strictly a paid feature on Canva and VistaCreate.

Corrected Recommendation: Canva Free

Canva Free remains the primary recommendation for a $0 ongoing budget with no payment card. It reliably delivers unwatermarked PNG, JPG, and Print PDF downloads for your 1:1 Facebook post, portrait story, and 1-page flyer, provided you use your own uploaded photos/logos and filter for free elements.
Orb Billing

Corrected Feature & Limitation Breakdown

Unwatermarked Downloads: Supported for non-premium assets and custom uploads. Premium elements feature a crown icon and must be avoided or replaced to prevent export fees or watermarks.
Pam Allen Online

No Payment Card Needed: Free sign-up allows full asset uploading and exporting without entering payment credentials.

Layouts & Resizing: Automated format conversion (e.g., resizing a post into a story) is locked behind paid plans. Each design format (Facebook Post, Instagram Story, Flyer) must be created individually from standard templates.

AI Assistance: Free accounts include limited access to native Magic Studio features (such as Magic Write for copy) subject to tiered credit caps, alongside select free third-party app integrations in the Canva marketplace.

What Still Needs Checking in Your Signed-In Account

Because vendor allowances and marketplace limits change frequently inside user dashboards, verify these directly after creating a free account:

Current AI Credit Counter: Check your specific remaining monthly/lifetime credits under Account Settings > Billing & Plans or directly within the Magic Studio / Magic Write panel inside the editor.

Export Watermark Check: Before downloading, ensure no elements in your canvas trigger a "Pay and Download" prompt (indicates an unreplaced Pro crown asset).
Pam Allen Online

Third-Party Marketplace AI Apps: Test individual third-party copy generation or photo-editing apps in the Canva "Apps" tab to verify their current free-tier caps or sign-in requirements.
